How We Name Our Sheep

NASSA requires each registered Shetland Sheep to have a unique name or number. It can be quite a challenge naming 30 to 40 registered lambs each year!

At Windswept Farms, we choose a different "theme" for lamb names every year. Not only are the themes fun and entertaining, but they allow us to quickly identify the age of a particular animal.

In 2007 our theme was types of trees. In 2006 our theme was magical creatures and in 2005 our theme was ocean creatures. In 2004 we paid tribute to our favorite musicians and rock stars and in 2003 our lambs were named after Harry Potter characters.

Over the years our themes have also included types of insects, presidents and first ladies, weather phenomenon, astronomy, flowers, and types of candy. With a couple of creative parents and three young children naming the lambs, things can get pretty interesting!
