December 2008

Winter has come early to Southwest Michigan this year. We came home from NAILE in a Lake Effect snow storm, and it's been snowing almost ever since!

NAILE was a great show for the kids this year. Joe had Grand Champion Shetland Ram at the Junior Show and Alex had Grand Champion Shetland Ewe at the Junior Show. Each of the three kids won a class in the Open Shetland Show later in the week. Many Windswept Farms rams and ewes left for new homes from NAILE and have been happily relocated at farms all over the country!

Once we were settled in back home, we began getting the flock moved for winter. Bred ewes and our few remaining ewe lambs have been moved to the upper winter pasture. Ewes with fall lambs have been moved to the old dairy barn and barnyard. All the rams are back in the ram pasture and are "working things out."

We are also in the process of renovating the old dairy barn into a second lambing barn. Heather asked for a "lamb cam" for her birthday/Christmas gift this year, and Mike found a nice one at NAILE! We are all really anxious to try out this new technology, and we're hoping it helps us have a more restful lambing season.

Mike finished skirting, evaluating, and photographing fleeces from our fall shearing, and they are now posted on the website. These are lambs' fleeces that have never seen hay- they are wonderfully soft and clean! We have a variety of colors and fleece types available- anyone interested in some nice Shetland lambs' fleece, please take a look!

Our family is now in the midst of the Holidays. We had a quiet Thanksgiving on the farm with Heather's family, we've had school concerts, work parties, and school parties. We are now looking forward to our family Christmas. We'd like to wish everyone a Very Happy Holiday Season!
